There’s something about looking downrange at a target that brings me both excitement and an unexpected sense of calm. I love shooting. The anticipation, the challenge, and the satisfaction of hitting my target are exhilarating. Yet, in those same moments, I find peace. For a while, the stressors of everyday life fade into the background, allowing me to focus on something I genuinely enjoy.
But beyond the enjoyment and challenge of marksmanship, I’ve come to recognize how its fundamentals reflect the inner strength it takes to navigate life with purpose, confidence, and intention.
Find Your Stance — Stand Firm in What You Believe

In shooting, your stance matters. It provides the stability and balance necessary to maintain control and effectively engage your target. Before you can focus on where you’re aiming, you must first be grounded in where you stand.
Life isn’t much different. For me, that foundation is my faith in God. Proverbs 3:5 reminds me to “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” Throughout my career, whether considering a new opportunity or pursuing a promotion, I trusted God’s direction regardless of the outcome. I still believe He opens the doors meant for me and closes those that aren’t.
Just as a solid shooting stance provides stability and balance, my faith keeps me grounded through life’s challenges. Inner strength doesn’t mean I’ll never be shaken. It means I have something to stand on when I am.
Align Your Sights — Stay True to Your Purpose
Another essential fundamental of marksmanship is sight alignment and sight picture. In shooting, it’s not enough to simply see your target. Your sights must be properly aligned and positioned in relation to where you intend to aim.
Life presents us with plenty of targets—personal goals, professional aspirations, and dreams we hope to achieve. Along the way, we’re presented with opportunities that can either move us closer to those targets or distract us from them. But not every opportunity is necessarily meant for us.
Years ago, I developed a personal mission statement centered on living a fulfilling life and positively influencing others. Whenever I’m faced with options, I consider each one and determine which aligns most closely with that mission. It gives me a reference point for making decisions rather than simply choosing what seems most appealing at the moment.
Just as sight alignment helps me establish where I’m aiming, my mission statement helps me stay focused on where I’m going. For me, inner strength includes knowing my purpose and allowing it to guide my choices.
Control Your Breathing — Relax, Relate, Release

Breath control is an important fundamental of marksmanship. Breathing naturally creates movement, and learning to manage that movement helps maintain a steadier aim. It’s a reminder that even small movements can affect the outcome when precision matters.
When situations become challenging, my instinct is to take a deep breath, avoid overreacting, and focus on addressing the situation at hand. Life will inevitably present circumstances that test our patience and challenge our composure. That’s when it’s time to relax, relate and release.
Just as controlling our breathing helps maintain a steady aim, maintaining composure allows us to approach life’s challenges with clarity and intention. Inner strength isn’t about controlling everything around us. It’s about remaining in control of how we respond.
Practice With Purpose — Confidence Through Competence
Proficiency in marksmanship doesn’t happen by chance. It requires practice, patience, and a commitment to mastering the fundamentals.

Working toward my Distinguished Expert qualification reinforced the value of disciplined practice. As I progressed through the program, I could see my skills improving. I learned to shoot with my non-dominant hand and worked through my discomfort with timed shooting. Each challenge required me to practice beyond what was familiar or comfortable. Earning the Distinguished Expert qualification was rewarding, but the confidence I gained along the way was just as meaningful.
Whether learning a new technology, developing a professional skill, or taking on an unfamiliar responsibility, confidence often comes through preparation and repeated effort. What initially feels intimidating becomes more manageable as our abilities grow.
Mastering a skill brings a different kind of confidence—one grounded in knowledge, experience, and preparation. Inner strength is about recognizing our potential and having the discipline to develop it.
Beyond the Target

What began as a passion for shooting has become an unexpected source of life lessons. Marksmanship has shown me that inner strength is about more than determination or the ability to overcome challenges. It’s about knowing what grounds me, remaining true to my purpose, maintaining composure under pressure, and having the discipline to continually develop my abilities.
In the end, hitting the target is rewarding, but discovering the strength within myself is the greater achievement.
