We asked Lana Van Winkle a few fun questions. Leadership Staff Spotlight is designed to help you get to know our awesome team of Leadership Staff a little better. Lana lives in Arkansas and is and an avid hunter and competitive duck caller.
If you could only hunt in one season which one would it be? Whitetail Deer
What’s your favorite location to hunt? Arkansas. We have all my favorite animals to hunt, Deer, Turkey and Ducks. But I would love to experience a hunt out west.
Who introduced you to hunting? I did not have a mentor. I have always been outdoorsy and was from a farming family. I always had an interest in hunting and finally decided to try bow hunting. I got alot of advice from more experience hunters, but I learned to deer hunt on my own the hard way. I learned to Duck and Turkey hunt by being mentored by my friend Crissy Springer.
What do you hunt for? Deer, Turkey and Ducks is my main 3 but love to Dove & Quail hunt when I get the chance. I like to fish too, or at least try to fish.
What hunting skill would you like to master? Improve my boating skills.
What’s your biggest hunting challenge? Not being able to run a boat by myself to get to the duck holes.
What would be the most amazing hunting adventure that is still on your bucket list? – Elk Hunt in Western part of the U.S.
What hunting skill do you wish you knew more about? Turkey calling. I love to turkey hunt and call just enough to be able to get one to come in at times, but wished my calling skills were alot better.
What’s the hardest hunting lesson you’ve learned? Too many to list, when you learn the hard way. Learn how to play the wind, scent control and not rush my shots.
If hunting was no longer an option for you what would you do with your time? I have no idea, but it would have to be something in the outdoors.
What could you give a 40-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation? Duck Calling
How many pairs of hunting boots do you own? 8, Can you ever have enough boots?
What style of hunting are you most passionate about? Bow Hunting. I love the challange and being able to be that close to the animals.

What do you like most about Shoot Like A Girl’s Mission
I Love how they empower women that they are completey capable of handling a firearm and the renewed freedom that it gives women.
If you didn’t have to sleep, what would you do with the extra time? I got to have some sleep…lol But if I did have more time in the day, I would practice shooting my bow and my shotgun more. I would like to learn how to garden.
What hobby would you get into if time and money weren’t an issue? Horseback riding. I love horses and used to ride when I was a kid. I would love to have my own farm and raise horses.
What non hunting related skill would you like to master? Cooking. I would learn more about how to cook gourmet meals.
What non hunting related do you wish you knew more about? Fishing. I know a little bit, but would love to become a better fisherwoman.
What are you interested in that most people haven’t heard of?
What’s the farthest you’ve ever been from home? Mexico
Where do you usually go when you when you have time off? I spend all my vacation time doing things that are outdoor related or just enjoying my down time at home.
Who inspires you to be better? My mom. I lost my mom to breast cancer serveral years ago, but she was such a good person and a good mom, everyone loved her. I still want to live my life so that she would be proud of me.
What are three interesting facts about you?
1. I come from a non-hunting family and my husand doesn’t hunt, but my son and I do
2. I loved to play basketball and softball in high school
3. I am a drafter by trade. I work on drawings for the company I work for.
What is your biggest fear? My vehicle breaking down when I’m traveling by myself in an unfamiliar place.
If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be? My mom’s fried chicken, mash potatoes and gravy and strawberry cake.
List two pet peeves
1. Fake and Phoney People.
2. People who don’t treat people they way they would want to be treated.
Which of the five senses would you say is your strongest
My hearing, unless there is alot of background noise.
One thing that not a lot of people know you love to do? I like mowing my yard. I mow about 2-3 acres and I like the time to listen to music or just think. I like the sense of accomplishment when I’m done.

Anything else you would like to add?
I wasn’t as fortunate as a lot of other women who are intraduced to hunting. My goal is to take what I have learned and pay-it forward and help other women in the same situation that I was in. I hope that I can teach and inspire other women that they can enjoy the outdoors reguardless of their background. Shoot-Like-A-Girl is giving me that oppurtunity to help other women find their confidence and help them start their outdoor journey.
