LEADERSHIP STAFF SPOTLIGHT: Learn more about Ashley Haag

We asked Ashely Haag a few fun questions. Leadership Staff Spotlight is designed to help you get to know our awesome team of Leadership Staff a little better. Ashley lives in Oregon and is and an avid hunter.

If you could only hunt in one season which one would it be?
Fall is my favorite season because I can hunt bear and deer which are my two favorite hunts. Turkey I hunt spring which is so fun, but fall is much more rewarding, and more of a challenge.

What’s your favorite location to hunt?

My favorite hunt has been in the Chesnemus unit in Eastern Oregon hunting mule deer. Every morning when you wake up to head out on a hunt there are literally no bounds to your hunt, and all you hear every morning are loud elk bugles. It is such an awesome place.

Who introduced you to hunting?

I grew up hunting with my grandpa, but being the girl of the family I never really got into being a real huntress until I met my husband. He constantly helps me with tree stands, knocking on doors for property permission, and is always supportive of my obsessive hunting tendencies.

What do you hunt for?

Deer, Elk, Turkey, Cougar, Bear, geese, grouse.

What hunting skill would you like to master?

I would like to learn to shoot a bow. I love rifle hunting but I would like to know how to shoot one.

What’s your biggest hunting challenge?

Hiking up huge mountains.

What would be the most amazing hunting adventure that is still on your bucket list? –

Hunting big game in another country. I would love a big brown bear, or seeing a grizzly up close would be a cool experience.

What hunting skill do you wish you knew more about?

I want to learn more animal calls for elk, and deer.

What’s the hardest hunting lesson you’ve learned?

To be ready with your rifle to either shoot 20 yards or 300 and even in a rushed situation to know your gun enough to make that change in your shot.

If hunting was no longer an option for you what would you do with your time?

I play softball as well as coach youth soccer, basketball, and softball.

What could you give a 40-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?
Probably hunting, or explain to a group of people the purpose of conservation and why hunting is important for the life of other animals living in the area.

What style of hunting are you most passionate about?
Spot and stalk is fun to me. When it comes to hunting I like the actual hunt. The feeling of outsmarting an animal in there natural environment is thrilling.

What do you like most about Shoot Like A Girl’s Mission?

I think getting people of all ages, and skill level aquatinted with a firearms, understanding how to use it, the safety behind it and just being knowledgeable with its use is so important. I also think it can give people a new prespective on gun use, and when used safely how fun it actually is.

If you didn’t have to sleep, what would you do with the extra time?

Read. I love reading books.

What hobby would you get into if time and money weren’t an issue?

It would still be hunting haha. I would travel and hunt all over. If not hunting then probably riding horses in the rodeos.

What non hunting related skill would you like to master?

Barrel racing in rodeos.

What non hunting related do you wish you knew more about?

Gardening probably. We have a garden every year, but I wish I knew more about the soil, and keeping flowers alive ?

What are you interested in that most people haven’t heard of?

Cooking. I love cooking compared to baking because you can create your own recipe and change it however you want.

What’s the farthest you’ve ever been from home?
I’m in Oregon, and have traveled to Florida.

Where do you usually go when you when you have time off?

Probably to visit my parents. My kids love going there and it is such a break for me because being the cook in my house, my dad is the cook in his so I can just go and do nothing.

Who inspires you to be better?

Probably my kids, or my husband.

What are three interesting facts about you?
I have an illness that is supposed to limit my life and things I do but I don’t let it.
I’m obsessed with babies
I enjoy reading more than watching TV most days.

What is your biggest fear?
Spiders or being stuck somewhere small because I’m very claustrophobic

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Beef Stroganoff

Rude kids

Which of the five senses would you say is your strongest
Probably smell
I have found quite a few deer during the rut just by smelling them.

One thing that not a lot of people know you love to do?
Watch football

Mountains or Beach?

Mountains. The beach is nice is some places but here in Oregon it’s cold and windy.. I have never enjoyed the coast here.

Anything else you would like to add?
I just hope to encourage more women to do what they love to do no matter the obstacles they may face. I hope that if they love to shoot guns for fun or hunt animals, to continue to learn about it, and find people like the women of Shoot Like a Girl who will continue to inspire you, teach you, and encourage you to be the best at whatever it is you choose to do whether shooting or hunting or both. Live your best life and enjoy every minute of it.
