Safety First – Hunter Safety System VestHss Pro Series

Safety, Safety Safety!  Ladies if you or anyone in your family is going to climb into a tree stand this year, you simply must invest in Hunter Safety System Vests.

We all know that traditional safety harnesses are a pain in the neck.  This is probably why there are so many unavoidable accidents each year of people falling out of tree stands, and this is exactly why the team down at Hunter Safety System designed the Hunter Safety System Vest.  Now, there is no excuse for  being at the truck, in the dark, trying to untangle the old style harness,  a big pile of straps…till the sun is coming up, and you get so frustrated you depart and “risk” it up in your tree stand without any harness at all.  The Hunter Safety Vest system is as easy to put on as…well, a vest.

Today I put up my tree stand.  I must say, this is a task I normally let my wonderful husband undertake on my behalf, but he was unavailable today during a break in the weather that meant it could be set up dry; so I jumped in our truck and called some friends to help me launch that monstrosity up in the tree.  The scariest part of putting a tree stand up is the climb up, to tie on the chair portion – before the stand is actually secured all the way to the tree.  Today, it wasn’t scary.  I simply threw on my hunter safety vest, and away I went; I tethered myself to the tree and climbed up.  When I got to the top, I tied onto my tree, and was able to secure the tree stand without fear of falling!  Let me describe a few details of the vest, the ease of making adjustments is awesome.  This was the first time I used a Hunter Safety System Vest, so I pulled it on, and simply lifted a layer of fabric and pushed a sort of toggle button, and pulled it comfortably snug.  The front buckle is huge, and easy to click on and off, but once it clicks on; it is solid and not going anywhere.  Then I just reached down for the leg strap and snapped it into a “car like” seatbelt buckle.  That was so easy, let’s face it we can all buckle our seatbelts in the dark!  I saw what type of adjustment I need to make, and simply unbuckled, made a quick easy adjustment, and click I was ready to go.

The hunter safety system should be a gift to every hunter who climbs in a stand.  Think of it as a health and life insurance policy because if used properly and always, it will save you thousands in medical bills, or more than likely save your life.  For more information about the Hunter Safety System visit the Shoot Like A Girl industry sponsor page and click on their link or click on the logo below.

Spot’N’Stalk ™ Quiver Pack by Game Plan Gear ™ from a Woman’s Perspective:

I have to say that the Spot’N’Stalk ™ Quiver Pack by Game Plan Gear ™ is a must have for any Hunter looking to carry their supplies in a functional pack. This lightweight quiver pack was certainly manufactured with the Hunter’s needs in mind.

The compartments are easily accessible for less hassle. I wasted no time in finding my favorite scents, rangefinder and calls.

I am one of the many Hunters who do not practice with a quiver attached to my bow, so this pack puts the quiver in an easy to reach place. This feature enables the Hunter, to hunt to and from their ideal hunting spots or to hunt by spot and stalking. The soft shoulder straps, allow the hunter to carry their supplies effortlessly.

The bed-roll pack was perfect for my late season hunts. Along with many other Hunters, I don’t wear my heavy jacket out to my hunting spot, because of the added heat of hiking my way there. Once I’ve cooled down then I easily accessed the bedroll portion to get my coat…perfect for late season-winter hunts!

This was a very quiet alternative to the hunting backpack I previously used. Beside this pack being quiet, in my opinion the time saved in finding my supplies was very surprising…I usually hunt from a blind, stopping to add attractants near the blind. This Quiver Pack made it so very effortless and fast, that I can’t see myself hunting with out it!

Game Plan Gear ™ thought of everything with this quiver pack, from hydration to comfort! For more information on the Spot’N’Stalk ™ Quiver Pack please go to www.gameplangear.com

The Bow BatThe BowBat by Game Plan Gear

The BowBat from Game Plan Gear is one of my favorite pieces of gear! What is a BowBat; it is basically a big multi-purpose carrier that your bow and everything you need for a day hunt fits in!  The system is designed for tree stands, but I used it for Turkey Hunting from the ground this past spring and it worked wonderfully!  We will be using BowBats on our deer hunting trips this month, and will let you know how it works from tree stands.

The feature I love most about the BowBat is the ease of carrying everything.  I normally leave my bow case in the truck, and walk along carrying my bow down by my side or up on my shoulder, switching back and forth because inevitably I get tired either way…If I have to run an obstacle course through thick brush, I end up looking like I’m trying to play twister to get through without getting my bow stuck on twigs and brush.  Has anyone else been there?  Well, if you have ever carried a purse, then you will know how it feels to carry the BowBat through the woods.  It is awesome; it feels less heavy than a fully loaded 1980’s bag!  It has adjustable straps, so it can hang at the most comfortable height for you.  It wraps around your bow, with your stabilizer on (I leave my quiver on my bow, but there is a place to hook it on the BowBat too).  It has cam covers that adjust to fit perfectly over your cams and protect them.

For turkey season, I had about a mile walk into the woods.  Not far, but loaded down with everything I needed, and a backpack full of decoys.  Without the BowBat, I would have been quite uncomfortable.  The system is designed with multiple pockets, and eyelets to hang everything you need off it.  The only things that didn’t fit in my BowBat were my decoys.  I had my bow with my broad head quiver, release, binoculars, range finder, box call, gloves and mask, water, snacks, cell phone, mini first aid kit, allen wrenches, hunting license and I hung my half blind off of it.  I hunted by a tree, with a half blind set up just on the edge of a meadow with my decoys placed out from 15yrd to 30yrds.  The BowBat is padded to hook up on your tree, so you can lean against it and access all the pockets easily from your tree stand…well, I thought, why not fold it in half and sit on part of it and lean against the other part!  Pure comfort.  It also gave me easy access to my gear without a lot of movement or fumbling around!  If you’re sitting in the woods for hours, waiting for the big gobbler to call back at you and run to your decoys, there is no reason you shouldn’t be as comfortable as possible.  I recommend the BowBat to every hunter out there.  The advantage it give us gals, is that we are used to carrying a purse, and if you have kids….you are used to carrying a purse with a child leaning on it….and if you have a husband or a boyfriend you are used to carrying a purse filled with all of their stuff…so the BowBat is perfect for us!  It is available online at www.shootlikeagirl.com.

Bosco Lodge

by Todd Butler

First of all this isn’t the hunting I grew up with in Oregon. When I was a kid, deer and elk hunting were spent in a camp sleeping on a cot in a tent, cooking over a small stove or fire. You spent a lot of time worrying about things such as how do I get my boots to dry out, do we have any dry wood for the campfire, or the ever popular do we have to eat lumpy oatmeal and runny eggs again (sorry mom). Needless to say it rained a lot in Oregon during deer season. We were our own outfitters on all those hunts and some were very successful and a lot of fun. So I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when Karen talked to me about going to Bosco Lodge Outfitters in West Monroe, Louisiana for some whitetail hunting. Well let me tell you it is waaaaaay better than any of those hunts in the old days. Whether you are a veteran hunter or a rookie, the whitetail deer hunting at Bosco Lodge is one of the finest introductions to Southern style hunting and hospitality to be found. Recently Karen and I, along with Shoot Like A Girl staff shooter Ammie Kennedy and her husband Matt, were fortunate to spend 3 wonderful days, hunting the best whitetails Louisiana has to offer. The 3 day hunt featured amazing animals, outstanding food, and fantastic service, all in a beautiful setting with a wonderful atmosphere.

Bosco Lodge

The main facility is a classic hunting lodge. When I win the lottery, my retirement plan, I want a lodge just like this one. It is a beautiful 6,000 square foot log building with 2 large living areas featuring big screen televisions (always tuned to the latest hunting shows or the current football game), floor to ceiling stone fireplaces, comfortable couches and some of the most amazing Whitetail deer mounts this side of Bass Pro Shops or Cabelas. The staff led by Owners Robert and Scott Stone are friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. They are committed to providing each guest/hunter with a memorable experience and the opportunity to hunt some of the biggest Whitetail bucks you will ever see. Guests are housed in a separate log bunk house featuring 5 very comfortable rooms. The accommodations are roomy and tastefully decorated with ensuite bathrooms featuring large showers. Each room is capable of lodging 2 guests. The rooms have refrigerators and air conditioners.

In the topflight cook shack and kitchen, Ranch/Lodge Manager Scott Smith puts together meals which are flavorful and filling with a strong lean towards traditional southern cuisine. The meals are scheduled around the hunting which is the primary focus of everyone on the ranch, guests and staff alike. In the evenings there is an outdoor fire pit, a wonderful place to gather with your fellow hunters, for recounting the days hunting adventures and misadventures. And make no mistake the hunting is amazing.

Bosco Lodge

Each day starts with a knock on the door of each hunters room. It is Scott Smith waking you up to prepare for the morning hunt. After you get up and make your preparations there is a light breakfast available to start the day and give you the energy to get out there. As soon as you are ready they are there with your buggy ride out to the area you will be hunting. It is a beautiful way to start the morning. The air is quiet and still with just a little coolness. When you are ready to come in after the morning stand, they will pick you up and deliver you to the lodge where a huge, delicious breakfast awaits. Throughout the day there is filling and delicious food available based upon each guests desires. In the evening after the hunt is done for the day Scott serves a huge dinner with dessert.

Bosco Lodge

Hunting is done from tree stands or ground blinds. There are over 600 acres of huntable land and the terrain is varied with a mixture of woodland, marsh and open meadows. All of it is relatively level and the tree stands are located for easy access. This will be advantageous for hunters with physical limitations. The staff transported us via buggy very close to the tree stand to be hunted and guided us on foot the remainder of the way. Each hunter/guest was provided with a ThermaCell Mosquito Repellant system (these are essential and greatly appreciated as they breed some big ones there). This was my first time using the ThermaCells and I was so impressed I went out and purchased my own. They also provide safety harnesses as needed. Currently, Bosco Lodge is using models from Hunters Safety System, which are very comfortable and easy to use. (See Karen’s evaluation) When a buck was taken a single cell phone call was made, the staff recovered the animal, taking numerous photos and transported it to the main lodge complex where it was quickly cleaned and caped by their experienced skinners. Bosco Lodge offers an in house taxidermy service and game processing is also available. The processing was done quickly, 3‐4 days, and for a very good price. So far Karen and I have enjoyed several meals using the venison from this buck and it is some of the best I have ever eaten. Sometime in February, Karen will be able to hang the grand buck she took on our wall at home. The staff at Bosco Lodge Outfitters have our deepest appreciation and respect for a memorable hunt.

The hunting season runs from September 1st through January 31st. The packages are fully inclusive and very reasonably priced given the service, lodgings, quality of animals and the hunting experience enjoyed.
